The year’s highlights

– Formation of a united Armenian basketball team to participate in the Egyptian league

January 1966 to July 1966
After the experience of the United Armenian team of 1948, once again the best players of HMEM Nubar Cairo, Ararat & Near East train under coach Kevork Ekserdjian to participate in Egyptian league matches. Later on the best players of Gamk & HMEM Nubar Alexandria join the team.

Friday 28 January
AGBU: Lecture by Mr Haig Jamgotchian on the life and work of the immortal writer Raffi on his 85th anniversary; the lecture is given at the Union’s headquarters.

Friday 4 February
AGBU Cairo: Lecture by Mr Haygazoun Kurkdjian, chairman of AGBU Cairo on his impressions on Etchmiadzine and Armenia; the lecture is given at the Union’s headquarters.

Friday 18 February
AGBU Cairo: Remembrance of the heroic battle of Vartanants at the Union’s headquarters. Lecturer Mr Hampartsoum Karayan.

Sunday 20 February
HMEM Nubar Cairo: Celebration of Vartanants: Lunch, keshkek, afternoon, inter-clubs basketball tournament around Vartanants Cup offered by Mr Serko Spendjian before his departure to Armenia.
Final HMEM Nubar Cairo HMEM Nubar Alexandria 55/49.
Dance party in the evening.

AGBU Alexandria: on the occasion of its 60th anniversary, lecture by Mr Haygazoun Kurkjian, chairman of AGBU Cairo on his impressions on Etchmiadzine and Armenia.

AGBU Cairo: Lecture by Mr Meguerditch Vosgian on the High Dam at the Union’s headquarters. The evening is organised by the youth committee.

AGBU Cairo: Lecture by the famous caricaturist Mr Alexandre Saroukhan on Hagop Baronian and his work (on his 85th anniversary). The evening is organised by the youth committee at the Union’s headquarters.

AGBU Cairo lecture at the Union’s headquarters by Mr Armen Dadour on the April 24th genocide.

AGBU Cairo lecture at the Union’s headquarters by Miss Ashkhen Moetemedian on the great composer Mozart, his life and works, playing several excerpts of Mozart’s music on the piano.

HMEM Nubar Alexandria: celebration of 1st of May. Dance party in the club’s garden with traditional Armenian cuisine.

HMEM Nubar Cairo wins two football matches at the College de la Salle Heliopolis. HMEM Nubar – Saint Paul 9/1, while the youth team defeated the veterans’ team by 5/2 and received the Edmond Bezaz Cup.

Celebration of AGBU’s 60th anniversary at The Nile Hall under the auspices of Arch. Mampré Sirounian. Artistic programme with Tatoul Altounian singing group led by Maestro Yetvart Hagopian. Opening speech by Mr. Sisag Shaldjian. Lecturer Maitre Stepan Chahbaz honorary chairman of AGBU Egypt district. Poetry recitation by Seta Djizmedjian and Berdj Kokorian, piano by Miss Ashkhen Moetemedian. Honouring of AGBU Cairo’s veteran members.

Thursday June 23 to July 2

HMEM Nubar Cairo. HMEM Nubar Beirut basketball team is invited in Egypt to play against the teams of HMEM Nubar Cairo and Alex.

Friday 24 June
AGBU Cairo: Annual youth gathering and reception organised by the youth committee at the HMEM Nubar club for the veteran members of the Union as well as for the artists who participated in the 60th anniversary and the members of Tatoul Altounian group. Piano, poetry and comedy shows.

Friday 1 July

HMEM Nubar Cairo football match against Heliolido club on the field of Sainte Famille- Heliopolis. HMEM Nubar team defeated Heliolido 3/2. Captain of the team Avedis Demirjian, manager: George Marangozian.
