The boys’ and girls’ teams of HMEM Nubar Cairo won once again the two cups of 2018 season’s first Egyptian Pan-Armenian tournament. A recurrence, which shows the unbroken pre-eminence of HMEM Nubar Cairo of this Egyptian Pan-Armenian contest during the past years.
In the final, Cairo’s HMEM Nubar girls defeated HMEM Nubar Alex 63-22 (34-10), and the boys’ team of HMEM Nubar Cairo defeated also their Alexandrian counterparts 62-42 (33-22). In the semi-finals HMEM Nubar Cairo had cleared off Homenetmen Ararat 64-39, while HMEM Nubar Alex had overpower Homenetmen Gamk 62-37
Before the start of finals, the chairman of HMEM Nubar Alex, Dr. Garbis Tossounian thanked the participating teams and their supporters for their presence in the tournament, he also thanked the dignitaries and the patrons of for their support. A minute of silence was held for the memory of Mrs. Dikranouhy Simonian, Mrs. Alice Depoyan and the ever-popular late Garbis Kalpakian (Dawly).
On Saturday 11th August a very successful gala dinner was hosted by HMEM Nubar Alexandria at the Greek club, with the presence of around 300 players and guests who danced the night away to the tunes of DJ Ayk until late hours.
In the past few years, HMEM Nubar Alex has restored back; single-handedly, this long lost excellent tradition of gathering all participants of the tournament in a joyful festive atmosphere. The board of HMEM Nubar Alex, its Ladies committee and its energetic youth are to be commended for their excellent initiative and work.
Another positive point was the participation of three girls’ teams in this tournament. A strong indication that feminine basketball is finding its way back after being absent for many years in these these Pan-Armenian basketball tournaments.
The tournament was held under the auspices of His Grace Bishop Ashod Menatsaganian, the Primate of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Egypt and the Presidency of Mr. & Mrs. Vahe Banohanian, the Chairman of Alexandria’s Armenian Community Council’s Executive Committee. The men’s cup was offered by Mr. & Mrs. Garen Touloumbajian, while the girl’s cup was offered by Mrs. Takouhy Zarougian.
