Onnig Avedissian was born in Boursa, a small city in Western Turkey, on November 21, 1898. In 1900, his father Hagop being employed as translator (from Turkish to French and vice versa) in a successful tobacco company, moved with his family to Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire. In this large and cosmopolitan city, Onnig acquired a solid primary and secondary education (1904-1915). Thereafter he was employed in several temporary jobs.
