Her maiden family name was Manouguian. She was born in Cairo, on the 14th of August 1941. Her mother was Mary Kazandjian, and her father was Avedis Manouguian. They both were born before the genocide of 1915, in Kharpert, a small town in eastern Turkey. After the genocide they took refuge in a local missionary orphanage, and from there they were both transported to Greece (in early 1920). After the war, they were sent to Egypt, during the 2nd half of 1920. Avedis and Mary were married in 1935, and three children were born to them;  Kevork (1936), Markrid (1941)
