Armenouhi Jamgotchian was born in Heliopolis, the north-eastern district of Cairo, on the 15th of June 1927. her father was Hagop Bohdjalian, that is why she was known in Cairene artistic circles during 1970s and 1980s as Armenouhi Yacoub (Yacoub being the Arabic equivalent of Hagop), for it is customary in Arab countries to call a person by his name followed by the father’s name. During 1930-39 Armenouhi acquired a primary education at Noubarian Armenian School, Heliopolis, and her art teacher was Simon Shahrikian (1911-1989).
