Arté (Artemis) Topalian was born in Manchester on February 6, 1906. In 1924, after ending her secondary education in a boarding school, she moved to Cairo, to join her parents who have been there three months earlier. In 1926, she began to be interested in art as a hobby. So, she had some lessons from an Italian academic artist who was active in Cairo at that period, named Adolf Scarzella, then she went to London and studied several months at Heatherley School of Fine Arts.
