Mardiros Sarkis Balayan (1891-1957)

Mardiros Sarkis Balayan was born on the 1st of March 1891, in Saghmga, an Armenian village around 20 Kilometres to the east of Arabkir, a well-known town in Turkey. From 1895-1905 Mardiros acquired an elementary education in the local Armenian school. His father Sarkis, being involved in dangerous political activities, as an important member in Hnchaguian party (established in Geneva in 1887), which was struggling against the Ottoman despotic rule, was obliged on the 1st of September 1905 to migrate to Egypt with his family. In Cairo, the young Mardiros from 1905-June 1909 was educated in Kalousdian Armenian National school.
