Diran Garabedian was born in Cairo in 1882. Therefore, if we disregard the engraver Tigran Polat (1874-1950) who was born in Alexandria, but spent most of his life in France, Diran can be considered the 1st Armeno-Egyptian artist in modern times who was born on Egyptian soil. Diran’s mother was named Serpouhy Balayan – Garabedian, born in Istanbul and deceased in Cairo (1856-1923), while his father was Bedros Garabedian, a rich landlord born and deceased in Cairo (1848-1916).
